JAPAN

Frequently Asked Questions

In June professors Haraguchi and Martin took a small group of students to Japan in a program sponsored by Asian studies. Professor Haraguchi who teaches in the department of modern languages at FIU, enrolled some of her Japanese language students. Professors Martin's business students were interested in observing an Asian business culture at work. No one was disappointed. After landing in Tokyo, the group spent several days there before taking the "Shinkansen" bullet train to kyoto. There the group visited the sites of this ancient capital, including the palace, temples and museums. From there, another train carried them to Hiroshima and Fukuoka, considered one of Japan's smaller cities because it has less then three million inhabitants.

Professor Haraguchi taught a Japanese culture course, while professor Martin's students studied strategic management and international business. These courses were greatly enhanced by the onsite observations of the students, and the opportunity to compare business and cultural practices. In particular, the ubiquitous 7-Eleven Japan offered the opportunity to compare product offering and pricing with the US counterpart. While some differences were dramatic, Japanese society is very orderly and Japanese accommodate visitors like few other cultures.
